World of Woodland Issue 56
This month’s value is: Unity
It’s been a while since our last newsletter, principally because it has been SO busy! This ‘heat wave’ special comes in the middle of one of the hottest spells we’ve ever experienced at Woodland. It's an opportunity to remind parents to apply sunblock for pupils, send in a water bottle and a peaked cap.
This summer term 2 is traditionally full of trips and special events, for all year groups. Our Year 5 group had a fabulous day out in Boulogne, for some the day went on a little late than planned. For Year 6 a trip to the Harry Potter studio provided a lot of excitement. Year 7 are off to Drayton Manor park today and Year 8 have their Thorpe Park trip planned for 20th July.
Stage Talent
Our KS3 pupils are rehearsing daily now for their show— Mary Poppins — showing at 7pm on Wednesday 11th to Friday 13th July at Redborne’s Connolly Hall. Tickets are available by contacting the Box office on 01525 750400 or email Miss Jenkins on — jenkinsn@woodlandacademy.co.uk. Prices are £6.50 per adult, £4.00 for concessions (students and senior citizens), Family ticket £18 (2 adults & 2 Children).
PTA
Our amazing PTA have been really successful this year, raising funds to provide ‘extras’ for all pupils. Our Summer Fayre raised over £2000 in just 2 hours, some of which is used to subsidise the upcoming Prom Night for Year 8 on 19th July and also the 2018 Flitwick Carnival winning float “Pantastic”!
Sports Days
We managed to host our Sports Days ahead of the heat wave, which were an excellent spectacle. Several records tumbled; well done to Francesca Baber and Callum Beer on your successes.
Other recent sporting successes include a huge congratulations to our Year 8 County Champions in Rounders and our Year 6 mixed Rounders team achieving runners up, losing the final by only half a rounder, both teams should be very proud of their achievements—Miss Hart.
On the subject of sport… hopefully this weekend England take another step closer to the World Cup Final!
Fundraising
Our pupils and staff really enjoy fundraising for good causes and our most recent efforts still have the monies coming in.
Nearly 50 pupils and staff walked the circular Timberland Trail for Brain Tumour Research and a similar number took part in the 12 hour Rowathon to raise funds for charities in honour of the Cockleshell Endeavour— a pair of rowers (Mick & Sparky) crossing the Pacific currently about 1700 miles off the coast of Honolulu, Hawaii. You can find them on Facebook.
Flitwick Lower School - Pantomime time again!
New Dates: 5 shows over the 8th & 9th & 15th December in the Village Hall.
Auditions for Adult actors are at the school on Tuesday 10th & Thursday 12th July for 7.30pm.
If you are not keen on acting but can help in any back stage roles i.e.: crew, painting, construction of set etc...please contact - flitwick.panto@gmail.com
Values
Our schools values are key to developing our pupils philosophy for their futures and our annual Values Day is an opportunity to celebrate and radiate them. Activities last Friday ranged from hiking, gardening and treasure hunts to theatre lighting, window design, acting, baking and martial arts. Mrs Watson & Mrs Ashby worked really hard to make sure everyone could take part. Our Twitter feed @woodlandacademy is full of great images.
Our annual House Competition ended yesterday with Vikings winning — they have amassed a winning total by displaying positive values, quizzing on their accelerated readers, engaging in sports day, swimming gala, spelling bees and countless other challenges. Well done to pupils and staff.
