A values based school

World of Woodland Issue 55

This month’s value is: Commitment

This week has marked the end of Primary education for Year 6, with an activity week to PGL in Devon or a series of events locally including water sports at Willen Lake and a trip to the Birmingham Think Tank.

After half term our Year 6 will commence their KS3 programme of study—making a headstart over their peers in primary schools around the country.  All other year groups also have end of year exams coming up soon including the annual GL progress tests in English and Maths.

Our Timberland Trail hike (25km) from Ampthill back to Ampthill via Lidlington, Marston, Stewartby and the Kings Wood now has nearly 50 participants.  The hike is raising (minimum) £50 per person for Brain Tumour Research.  This charity is the one that runs the “Wear a Hat” event nationally.  If your child would like to join us, it’s not too late, just email  office@woodlandacademy.co.uk to receive your sponsorship pack.

Our PTA are busy arranging the final two events of the year (i) The Summer Fayre on 22/06 6-8pm and (ii) The Year 8 Prom Night on 19/07 7-9.30pm.  The Summer Fayre  this year will have a licensed bar serving Pimms and other summery drinks, plus the BBQ, refreshments, bouncy castle, tombolas, popcorn, candy floss, adopt a teddy, wheel of fortune and much more!

If you would like to help please do email the school office or return the slip on the letter that came home.  We are holding 2 non-uniform days to receive donations.  The first on 07/06 for toiletries (especially gift sets) and toys (games, soft toys, books etc) and the second on 18/06 for bottles and chocolates.  Please do support the PTA and give generously if you can.  Thank you!!

Year 8 Prom
The prom night for Year 8 is a real celebration of our pupils 4 years at Woodland, but ultimately is a reward.  Most pupils have received their invitation but some have been told that their class charts record needs to improve before they are invited.  In most cases this is having the desired effect and many more invitations will be sent out today.  Those who still haven’t got the message will still have at least one further chance to shine after half term.  Thorpe Park invitations will follow in a similar fashion.

 2019 Ski Trip
This week we have announced our 2019 ski trip to  Italy (Sestriere) with a day trip to Disneyland Paris en route home.  The cost of £850 includes the personalised hoodie, all ski equipment and lessons, entry tickets, full board and travel.  For futher information please email conquest@woodlandacademy.co.uk  This trip is open to all current pupils including year 8 who will be at Redborne in Year 9 by departure.

Staff Changes
We have some staffing changes now in effect.  Ms Dimmock has started her maternity leave and is being covered by Mrs Johnson.  Mrs Andrews has started her maternity leave this week and is being covered by a new member of staff, Mr Smith (yes another Mr Smith but no relation to our Site Manager!).  Ms Bryan will return from maternity leave shortly after half term and take back her music classes.  Miss Dobson will then return to her former classes and Mrs Barrett will stay for the remainder of the year to help us cover a few timetable gaps.

Next year we have five form classes of Year 5 and they will all be located in the Jubilee Block which is having a complete make-over this Summer.  The school has also attracted over £400k of investment to replace our heating too, so lots of work taking place this Summer.

And finally……….. Enjoy the Bank holiday weekend and half term break.  Especially year 6 and staff from PGL who will need a week to recover!

Last Friday Jas Singh came to talk to our Year 7s about Sikhism.  He also taught them how to tie turbans.

Rowathon—Rowing Machines Needed
Woodland are supporting Mick Dawson’s Pacific Row to raise funds for Blind Veterans UK and the Royal Marines Charity by holding a Rowathon on 14th June.  If you are able to loan a rowing machine to school for 24 hours, could you please contact either

Thanks for your help.

Race for Life
On 1st July 2018 Eleanor Swannell (5SKP) will be taking part in the Race for Life to raise money for Cancer Resarch UK and help beat Cancer.   Eleanor will be running as part a team ‘The Swannell Girls’ with her sister, Isabel, and her mum, Lisa who is currently being treated for breast cancer.  If you would like to sponsor Eleanor and help fund the search for new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat this disease then please dontate via

Calling all gardeners….. Can you help?
If you have any plants or cuttings to spare, we are looking to give our garden a make-over on Values Day (Friday 29th June) to show our Commitment to improving the environment for ourselves and the wildlife that shares it.  Any donations to school would be gratefully received.

Thank you for your support.
Mrs Barrett

Wear a Hat Day’
