World of Woodland Issue 40
This month’s value is: TOLERANCE
This week has been dominated by the SATs tests—they may only affect Year 6 but all our staff are involved in the administration, support, invigilation and even serving breakfasts! We are all glad they are finished today. For Year 6, their activity week marking the end of their primary education is during the week commencing 22 May. The year group either have a week in Devon at PGL or a package of more local activities, including water sports at Willen Lake.
Before Year 6 have their activity week, many of them will be taking part in a fundraiser for Hand in Hand Ethiopia (a local Flitwick-based charity) by walking the 25km Timberland Trail on 20 May. Over forty intrepid hikers and five staff will set off from Marston Vale Forest Centre at 9am and aim to raise £50 per person minimum. We are having a nonuniform day on 19 May to boost the total—please feel free to send in more than the usual £1.00 donation if you would like to sponsor the walkers! We do have a few child spaces available if anyone wants to join—please email me at conquestj@woodlandacademy.co.uk for more details.
As many parents have found, there are some teething issues with the new online biometric payment system for school dinners. Please accept our apologies; our school meals provider, AIP, are trying to solve both online and point of sale issues. As this system is completely independent of the school, if you have queries please email Martin, our kitchen manager, on woodlands.academy@ainp.co.uk and he will respond after lunch is completed.
This week we have sent out the ski trip 2018 invitation letters. After a twitter poll on @WoodlandAcademy suggested that USA as a destination would be most popular, we have put a package together. If you would like your child to join the Woodland/Alameda trip to Mount Snow in Vermont and spend a day sightseeing in New York City, please make sure your deposit of £200 is paid by 26 May. More details are available from jenkinsn@woodlandacademy.co.uk
If you haven’t looked at our Twitter feed recently, you can see pictures of the 8AB/5SKP Karaoke events won on Red Nose Day. Also on there are pictures of our anti-bullying team in their training session and our Nurture Group visit to the Fire Station. Parents of Year 6 may like to follow us for updates from PGL.
And finally, thank you so much to our parents for saving us thousands of pounds in advertising this term. Our texts and emails which you have shared have helped us find candidates for our job vacancies.
2017 Moonwalk
A group of school mums, friends and family, including Mrs Sutton, are taking part in the London Moonwalk on the night of 13th May in aid of Walk the Walk which raises money for breast cancer charities. For more information and to sponsor them please head to https://moonwalklondon2017.everydayhero.com/uk/flitwick-flappers. All your support will be very much appreciated!
BARS Writing Competition
Some of our Key Stage 2 writers joined Mrs Anderson in a competition workshop last term, with the goal of entering some creative writing inspired by old photographs in the Bedfordshire Archives. Congratulations to those who received a certificate of recognition: Clara Vela-Mason, Ella Wilshaw, Emily McClaughlin, Jasper Spencer, Sophie Peet, Daniel Goodson, Jess How and Jessica Chester.
Even more exciting news was that Ruby Blackmore's short story was published in the anthology, under the Highly Commended title, and Justin Milne, from Year 6, was a finalist! His feedback suggested that this is a young author to keep a look-out for in the future, and we are very proud of the effort and time put in by all our contestants.
