This month's value is: FREEDOM

The Easter holidays are approaching soon and so this is our final Spring term edition. Today is Red Nose Day and our pupils are eagerly anticipating the auction of promises this afternoon. Classes are bidding for rewards with their combined capital, including a rock concert, class load of cookies or even a ride home for everyone in our minibuses! With the non-uniform funds included, we’re hoping to raise around £1,000 for Comic Relief.

As I am writing this, our Normandy trip 2 is enjoying the culture on offer there, including trying snails for dinner and the more serious visits to the war cemeteries. Our explorers are due to return late tonight. The new format of a Tuesday-Friday trip has been warmly received.

On the subject of France, our annual Year 5 end of year Boulogne trip has been planned for 23 June. The letters have now gone out—there are spaces for everyone but those who do not relish the 4am departure will have a special day at school. The Boulogne trip includes a tour of the old walled city, a picnic in the park, a visit to Nausicaa (the amazing aquarium) and play on the beach. It’s a long, but very rewarding, outing.

The school ski trip is also going to France this year, departing on 31 March at 6pm. Parents will have received their final arrangements letter today. All trips can be followed on Twitter@WoodlandAcademy

Many of you will remember our colleague, Mr Martin Rowland-Thomas. Our grassed area near the science block is flowering with the daffodils planted in his memory—every Spring we will remember our much-loved legendary Welshman!

Staffing news: we will welcome back Miss Dimmock to our Y5 teaching team from September 2017 after two years away in Cornwall. Parents of our older pupils will no doubt remember her well. Mrs Sutton has been appointed as Assistant Head of Y7 commencing after Easter to support Mr Guthrie. This is because our Y7 cohort has almost reached the 170 mark, a real baby boom year!

I would like to congratulate Lauren Keen (8AB) on designing the RE Society of Bedfordshire’s new logo. Her original artwork has been digitised by professional artists and the final design will be used by the Society.

Please note that we have made changes to our school term dates for 2017-18; changes that we feel improve educational provision and parents’ childcare arrangements. The start of term will be Wednesday 6 September 2017, allowing staff two training days at the start of the year. Pupils’ days lost here are returned on 16 April 2018 and 4 June 2018 so that there are ‘whole’ pupil weeks to make childcare planning easier.

I hope all mothers have a fantastic Mothering Sunday this weekend. You all deserve a pamper day and I hope our pupils show their appreciation!

And finally...the Easter holidays start on Wednesday 5 April and pupils are expected back on Tuesday 19 April. Have a wonderful break and return healthy and enthusiastic for the Summer term.
