A values based school

World of Woodland Issue 27

This month’s value is: SIMPLICITY

July begins today and our final value in our two year cycle is Simplicity. Simplicity may not be the biggest and boldest of our school’s values but in an ever complicated world (social media, politics, globalisation, mental health etc) it is very important that we celebrate the simple things in life. This month (14th July) we will be holding our annual Values Day – for the first time including our Y8 pupils – celebrating all our values, with a theme of the Olympic and Paralympic values of Friendship, Respect, Excellence, Determination, Inspiration and Courage. Pupils are being offered a choice of about 30 activities to take part in, where they can select their top 5. We will then try and accommodate all pupils in areas of interest to them. Activities include hiking from Woburn, archery, Minecraft, arts, crafts, drama, environmental work and many other opportunities. Each activity allows pupils to demonstrate and celebrate our values – simple!

This week we have held our sports days after postponing them last week due to poor weather. Both events escaped the rain and attracted an impressive parent spectator crowd to see an array of talented performances on the track and in the field. The winning houses were Saxons at KS2 and Britons at KS3. Well done to all athletes and to Miss Hart for leading the events! A few photos below from the day but many more on our Twitter site

The cast of Matilda is now entering the final stages of rehearsal and tickets for the shows, being held in the new Connolly Hall at Redborne have gone on sale. The performances are on 13th, 14th and 15th July and tickets can be ordered online or via the school’s cash office; adults £6, children and concessions £3, family tickets (2 adults + 2 children) £15. Doors and bar open at 6pm, the show is at 7pm.

This week we are launching our new look website – it’s the same address but is easier to navigate, holds more information and incorporates our Twitter feed so that it is also current. Let us know what you think by emailing our IT manager, Mr Griffin on griffinl@woodlandacademy.co.uk
I will be writing to all parents shortly to announce that we will be installing an automatic barrier to the car park during the summer holiday. The car park is barely big enough to cope with staff and official visitors to the four educational establishments that are on our campus, so this measure is being taken to reduce the unauthorised use by ‘dropping off’ parents and freeloading commuters. Our benevolent neighbour, Tesco, happily extends the opportunity to ‘Park
& Stride’ to drop off and collect pupils and so we once again request that parents do not drive into the car park unless attending an appointment in school. The barrier will include a call point to each educational establishment so that visitors will need to ‘call in’ to request access.

A week today is our Year 5 trip to Boulogne. A final arrangements letter is coming out today (attached to this email), with timings and requests for missing EHIC cards and permission form. Let’s hope for a lovely summer day, as the time on the beach is particularly wonderful!

Staffing update: I have appointed a new Science Technician (Jo How) and a new Teaching Assistant (Grace Dial) for a September start, replacing Mrs Houghton and Mrs Milne who are starting new chapters in their careers. We now have no vacancies ahead of the new year, which is excellent news with national teacher shortages being a current educational issue.

Year 8 parents please make sure that you have the Leavers’ Assembly date and time in your diary. We hope to get started at 1pm on Thursday 21stJuly and sincerely hope that every child is represented in this moving tribute - a celebration to 4 years at Woodland.

And finally…to all those that are going to Amp Rocks tonight, have a great evening and hopefully remain dry!
