World of Woodland Issue 14

This month’s value is: Fairness

Last week we had the spectacular Shrek performances. Mrs Hardacre and the KS3 cast worked so hard to put together this wonderful musical for us and we certainly have been treated! All the actors, singers, dancers and backstage team have really excelled. Mrs Hardacre and team had the added issue of building our own ‘swamp theatre’ this year too, in a marquee on our playing fields. Thank you to the whole cast, the supporting parents, staff and volunteers and of course the director Mrs Hardacre for putting on a great show. Some photos below from opening night courtesy of Ben Peet.

Yesterday we ran an event for all of the Year 4 pupils that will be coming to us next year – again to celebrate our community values – a shared ethos with our three feeder Lower Schools. The event featured group activities with the pupils from all the feeder schools mixing together at Wrest Park, Silsoe and was supported by selected Y7 pupils and our Year 5 team lead by Mrs Watson and Mrs Ashby as the Values Leaders.

Our annual Values Day took place on the 14th – a chance for us all to celebrate our shared values and to model them to one another. The day is an activity day with some choice for pupils to take part in arts, sports, hiking, environmen-tal work, filmmaking, creative writing and much more. The school’s twitter account is awash with images from the day. Good values are essential for all of us to ‘rub along’ with each other in a school, in our small town both today and in an ever changing future too. Building relationships with one another, foster a sense of community which really help with managing behaviour in school too. Below are a few shots from our Values event. Thank you to Mrs Watson and Mrs Ashby our Values Leaders for arranging the day.

Pupils in Bedfordshire with mental health issue are often supported by the CHUMS charity www.chums.uk.com , a very deserving charity that has worked with a number of our pupils over the years and with those in neighbouring schools too. This year we will be using our 25m Charity Hike to raise money for CHUMS and all pupils are welcome to join in and raise money through sponsorship. The hike will take place on Sunday 7th July 2019 from Woburn at 9am. If you’d like your child to join in please email Mr Conquest conquestj@woodlandacademy.co.uk and receive the sponsorship forms and details. For pupils that have joined this charity fundraiser previously this is a new route – so a new experience.

This week we have our Sports Days – separate ones for Y5 & 6 and Y7 & 8 – on Tuesday and Wednesday. The events start at 1pm and all parents are welcome – please enter and sign in via the small green gate. In the event of wet or exceptionally hot weather we have reserve dates—the Y7&8 reserved date is Tues 2nd July.

The Y5&6 has been cancelled and will now be held on the reserve date of Mon 1st July.

The Sports Days will contribute lots of house points towards the House Cup totals - the winning house will be receiving a fun session with BBQ from 3pm on July 3rd …at the moment any of the houses can win it. The House Cup total is from all the events through the year including class charts, wow letters and the House Competitions.

Next week too is our annual Year 5 day trip to Boulogne - many of our pupils will be visiting France for the first time and although it’s such a long day it is such a worthwhile experience. The day begins at 4am with a coach journey to Dover, the ferry crossing at breakfast time and then the short hop to from Calais to Boulogne. Pupils explore the old citadel, the cobbled streets, the market square and the city ramparts then enjoy the world renowned Nausicaa aquarium (sharks, penguins, all the characters from Finding Nemo and the sealions) and finally a few minutes on the sandy beach with an ice cream. Bon Voyage to all the staff and pupils on their big day out.
And finally…we do have one vacancy that we are accepting applications for – a part time receptionist to work in the front office on Thursdays and Fridays from Sept 2019. If you have an interest in this please look at our website or contact Tia Brown on brownt@woodlandacademy.co.uk

Our Year 6’s experienced a day out to Harry Potter Studios on the 4th July, they encountered some amazing special effects, travelled on the Hogwarts Express and refreshed themselves with Butter beer and Ice cream.
