World of Woodland Issue 07

This month’s value is: Humour

As this is the first edition of the World of Woodland for 2019, may I wish you all a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year. Christmas seems like a lifetime ago already but winter only just appears to be getting going. With that in mind please be reminded of our school closure practice – a very unlikely occurrence I might add! In the event of snow making it unsafe to open the school, we will send out a text message first, then post to Twitter (which also appears on the school website) and finally on the C Beds SOS website: https://www.centralbedfordshire.gov.uk/webApps/SOS/cbc.aspx . You can also set this website up to send you alerts.

Our school parliament elections took place last week, so we have a new pupil government. The elected pupils will have roles in developing the school environment, our charity work and even the teaching and learning too. Mrs Watson and Mrs Ashby are the overseers and I’d like to wish them and their parliamentarians all the very best for 2019. Their actual counterparts in Westminster will almost certainly have a less positive experience given the political climate…

Our Y7 girls basketball team have managed to win the Bedfordshire Championship this week too – not a bad reward for hard work and practice, coming so soon in 2019! Well played to the team and the manager Miss Hart.

All years took part in the Bedfordia cross country competition on Wednesday. Years 7&8 were slightly unlucky with the weather having to brave the wind and rain for their races. All pupils excelled in the competition.

Last evening was our belated Christmas gift to all pupils from our hard working PTA; a swim at the Oasis pool in Bedford. Over 500 pupils turned up for a splash, wave riding and sliding. We know it was a great evening from all the smiles and the many thanks that we received. Thanks to the staff for being there to manage the hoards of changers.

The next PTA event is the Valentines Disco on 7th Feb. There is a clash with an important Y9 event at Redborne which means that a number of our usual helpers are unavailable. There is a possibility that this event will be cancelled, without parent support – we still need help so if you can help sell refreshments please email conquestj@woodlandacademy.co.uk

Coming up very soon is our Musical Show ‘The Greatest Showcase’ with evening performances at 7.00pm on Feb 5th and 6th with tickets available online now through our website http://www.woodlandacademy.co.uk/Useful-Links/ tick-ets are priced at £3 per adult and £2 per child, Family £8 (2 Adults, 2 children). Due to the large cast, ticket are expected to sell out fast!!

Pupils are also rehearsing for the KS2 Musical Production (Alice in Wonderland) for Easter shows and the auditions for the KS3 Musical Shrek are taking place now too. So much to tempt our young performers…

It is disappointing to report to parents that Mr Simon Smith (Science teacher and 6SCS form tutor) will not be re-turning to Woodland. Mr Smith will be replaced as a form tutor by Mrs Sutton and his replacement as a Science Teacher is being sought for after Easter. It is very regrettable to make changes mid-year but personnel changes are usually beyond our control and in this case quite unexpected.

And finally…best wishes to all the staff and Y8 pupils for the Calshot trip coming up in w/c 28th Jan I hope that you all have a great week working on Rivers, Coastlines, Tudor history and of courses the adventurous activities of climbing, skiing and the velodrome. Key dates are included below – please note the additional non-uniform date in Feb 8th which is an addition to the previous newsletter.

Lost Property
Could we please remind parents and carers to name all your children’s personal belongings and uniform, we always end up with such a large amount of lost property at the end of a term which we discard and give to charity— parents are always welcome to come in after school to check our lost property area and named items are always returned to their owners.
We have received a request from a parent in year 5 if you could check at home for her daughters PE kit, it is all named and is in a red drawstring bag which contains white tennis style trainers and a PE kit with a red Saxon house top, we would appreciate if all year 5 parents could check it hasn't been brought home in error.
